Noerine Kaleeba, Ugandan (Chair) has recently returned to Uganda from Geneva where she served as community mobilisation adviser for the joint United Nations programme on HIV/AIDS (UNAIDS) for ten years. Before that, she founded and led the AIDS Support Organisation (TASO), an NGO in Uganda. Now based in Kampala, Noerine manages the Africa HIV/AIDS portfolio for the Children Investments Fund Foundation (CIFF). A charismatic leader with extensive capacity to mobilise communities from local to international levels, she is committed to a future world without AIDS. Noerine joined the ActionAid UK Board in 1999, and became Chair of the Board of ActionAid International in 2003.

Mary Kaphweleza Banda, Malawian, is a politician and social entrepreneur with a commitment to gender equality and the creation of democratic values. From 1996 to 2003, she was a cabinet minister in Malawi, Minister of Health, Gender, Youth and Community Services and finally Minister of State responsible for HIV/AIDS programmes. Mary joined the ActionAid UK Board in 2001 and the Board of ActionAid International in 2003 as an independent trustee. She stepped down in December 2006.

Silvio Caccia Bava, Brazilian, is a social scientist, founder and coordinator of the Polis Institute, president of the Asociación Latinoamericana de Organizaciones de Promoción al Desarrollo (ALOP) and Executive Director of the Le Monde Diplomatique Brasil newspaper. He was previously coordinator for the International Forum on NGO Capacity Building (IFCB), was twice president of Brazilian Association of NGOs (ABONG), former director of Latin America Habitat International Coalition (HIC) and member of the national board of Nutritional and Food Security. Silvio is Chair of ActionAid Brasil Board and joined the Board of ActionAid International in May 2007.

Karen Brown, British, is an independent adviser on media, education and communications. She has recently been working with the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew on public education. She was formerly Deputy Director of Programmes with the UK’s Channel Four Television and Managing Director of its subsidiary ‘4 Learning’. Karen was until recently a member of the UK’s General Teaching Council and non-executive director of The Television Corporation plc. She is an associate partner of Digital Public and Fellow of the Royal Television Society. She joined the ActionAid UK Board in 2003, became its Chair in 2004 and joined the board of ActionAid International in the same year.

Ken Burnett, British, is an international lecturer and consultant specialising in marketing and communications for non-profit organisations worldwide. A Fellow of the Institute of Fundraising, UK and an honorary Fellow of the Institute of Direct Marketing, Ken is author of 'Relationship Fundraising' and other books on fundraising and voluntary sector governance. He was UK Director of ActionAid from 1977 to 1979 and Director of ActionAid's fundraising and communications departments from 1980 -1982. Ken joined the ActionAid UK Board in 1995 and became Chair in July 1998 leading up to the formation of ActionAid International. Ken re-joined the Board of ActionAid International in 2006 as an independent member.

Patrick Dowling, Irish (Treasurer) has had a career mainly in banking and finance. He has been Finance Director of a number of public limited companies and is presently a director of Waterford Crystal Limited and Group Secretary of Waterford Wedgwood plc. Patrick has been the Chair of the ActionAid Ireland Board since October 2002 and joined the Board of ActionAid International in 2003. In December 2006, he resigned as Chair of the Board of ActionAid Ireland, but continued in his capacity as Treasurer on the ActionAid International Board until April 2007.

Cândido Grzybowski, Brazilian, is General Director of the Brazilian Institute of Social and Economical Analysis (IBASE), an internationally active non-governmental organisation in Brazil. He was involved in the creation of the Inter-American Agriculture and Democracy Network (RIAD) and the World Social Forum (WSF) in 2000, and civil society organisations’ response to the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade (GATT) and the World Trade Organisation (WTO). He joined the ActionAid UK board in 2001 and the ActionAid International board in 2003 as an independent trustee.

Frank Kirwan, British (Treasurer) has a portfolio of non-executive directorships primarily in the finance sector and is vice-chair of the Scottish Charity Regulator (OSCR). He teaches on the MBA programme at the University of Edinburgh Management School and has background in strategy development and change management. He was formerly Director of Strategy for the Royal Bank of Scotland Group and is a former Treasurer and Chair of the Audit Committee of Oxfam (GB) and of the Accounts Commission for Scotland which audits the economy, efficiency and effectiveness of local government spending. He joined the ActionAid International board as an independent trustee and treasurer in April 2007.

Roberto Kishinami, Brazilian, was a founding member of Partido dos Trabalhadores (Workers' Party) in 1980 and Executive Director of Greenpeace Brazil from September 1994 to March 2001. He is currently a partner of NRG Ltd, an energy and environment consultancy company based in Brazil. He has been the Chair of Board of ActionAid Brasil since 2001 and joined the Board of ActionAid International in 2003. He stepped down from the boards of ActionAid Brasil and ActionAid International in May 2007.

Diego Masi, Italian, was the founder and is currently the president of the first, and now leading, promotion marketing agency in Italy. Diego was town hall member of Milan from 1985 to 1990 and as a member of the Italian National Parliament in 1994. He has also written extensively on politics. Diego joined the Board of ActionAid Italy in 2003 and became its Chair in 2004. He joined the board of ActionAid International in 2004 and resigned from both the ActionAid Italy and ActionAid International boards in January 2007.

Alexandra Mitsotaki, Greek, studied Political Sciences at the Institute of Political Sciences in Paris, and went on to study Development Law before working for the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD). She is a founder of ActionAid Hellas, established in 1998, and joined the board of ActionAid International in 2003.

Andrew Mott, American, directs the Community Learning Project, an initiative designed to foster learning in the field of community and social change. He is also a Senior Fellow at New York University’s Wagner School of Public Service, working with the Research Center on Leadership in Action. Formerly Executive Director of the Center for Community Change, he has worked with grassroots community groups in the United States for over 35 years. Andy has also worked extensively on national policy issues, chairing several national coalitions and overseeing projects that have involved grassroots groups in participatory research and action on those issues. Andy joined the board of ActionAid International in 2006 when he became Chair of the Board of ActionAid USA.

Matteo Passini, Italian, is Chief Executive Officer of BIT spa which specialises in local financing of cooperative credit and food farming banks. He is also a lecturer in Ethical Finance at the University of Bologna. Matteo obtained an economics degree from Univeristy Ca’ Foscari, Venice and went on to work for the Banca Commerciale Italiana. He then moved to Banca Etica taking up successive posts in the organisation as General Director, Banca Popolare Etica - Padova, Director - Milan, CEO and then Manager of Alliances & Strategic Partnerships. Since 2000, he has been a member of the AICCON board. Matteo joined the board of ActionAid International in January 2007 when he was elected as Chair of the Board of ActionAid Italy.

Sriprapha Petcharamesree, Thai, has been a lecturer on the Human Rights Studies Programme at Mahidol University, Thailand since 1996, teaching Human Rights in Asia and Human Rights in International Relations. She is also a visiting lecturer at the Southeast Asian Studies Programme at Thammasat University. Sriprapha has also worked with the Department of Technical and Economic Cooperation at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Bangkok and with UNICEF in development and humanitarian areas. She has been a member and advisor on public hearings relating to Thailand’s draft National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) Bill, and sits on several of the commission’s committees. She joined the ActionAid International board in 2005 as an independent trustee.

Val Roche, Irish, comes from a development background having worked for over 10 years in Central America as well as undertaking several subsequent short term assignments in Africa and Asia. Val has worked with the Irish Development Agency, Trocaire and has carried out several evaluations of programmes funded by the European Union and the Irish government. She is currently Managing Director of her family business, The Woollen Mills Ltd. Val has was a trustee on the ActionAid Ireland Board since 2001. She took over from Patrick Dowling as Chair of the Board of ActionAid Ireland in December 2006 and joined the board of ActionAid International in the same month.She stepped down from the boards of ActionAid Ireland and ActionAid International in July 2007.
