Let’s not forget the women in Fiji this International Women’s Day: ActionAid

08/03/2016: International Women’s Day must serve as a reminder of women in Fiji who are leading the disaster response to Cyclone Winston, humanitarian agency, ActionAid Australia, said today.

Michelle Higelin, Deputy Executive Director for ActionAid Australia, said this morning:

“International Women’s Day is a moment to celebrate women, their struggles, and the significant contributions to society across the globe.

“This International Women’s Day, we’re calling on Australians to remember the current crisis in Fiji, and to stand in solidarity with women from affected villages, who are taking responsibility for ensuring their families and their communities have access to their basic needs at this difficult time.

“The damage caused by Cyclone Winston is significant and we know that it is women who are being disproportionately impacted, as they always are in disasters. Unfortunately, in an emergency, women and their needs are often overlooked.

“This International Women’s Day we call on Australians to remember that the women of Fiji, our neighbours, are working hard to rebuild their communities after the devastation of Cyclone Winston, and to give what they can to support these women.”

ActionAid is working in Fiji with local partner, FemLINKPACIFIC, to ensure that women are included in relief efforts, and that they are given the opportunity to have their say about what is being distributed to communities, to ensure that their needs are met.
