Indigenous People of Bangladesh Demand Constitutional Recognition as ‘Indigenous People’

Indigenous students formed humain chain for their constitutional recognition

On the occasion of International Day of the world’s Indigenous People 2011, thousands of  people from different regions of Bangladesh gathered at  Kendriya  Shahid Minar (Central  Martyr Monument) in capital  Dhaka to denounce branded ‘indigenous people’ as ‘small ethnic community’.

Eminent public figure including Members of Parliament, National Human Rights Commission personnel, academicians, representatives of political parties, civil society organisations, INGO personnel, activists and others joined  the mass gathering and demanded constitutional recognition of the community as  ‘indigenous people’. The speakers as well as the Bangladesh Indigenous People Forum (BIPF) rejected indigenous people’s identity as ‘small ethnic community’ which is imposed on them amending the constitution recently. The mass gathering ended followed by the indigenous people’s cultural programme and rally participated by people from all walks of life.
