Education
Promoting access to quality education over the years has taken the form of supporting the provision of quality education both within and outside school;
REFLECT for empowerment, advocating for access to education, improving the skills of teachers, supporting the development of school infrastructure
Control of Violence against girls in schools and supporting access to education for excluded children.
These have been recognised as key undertakings by both government and partners.
The major outcomes of these activities include:
• Rehabilitation of 2 schools and construction of new ones.
• Constructing of a rehabilitation and youth centre which has been useful institutions for growing skills for the youth,
• Improved teacher skills through refresher courses and an improved teaching and learning environment.
• The invigoration of the once defunct Teachers’ Union and National parents’ Association branches.
• Through REFLECT, communities have improved their literacy and have been empowered to engage with development issues in their areas.
• A series of education campaigns and advocacy approaches have been made aiming at improving the quality of education.
Women’s Rights
Promoting women’s rights has been a major activity for ActionAid.
The main focus has been to support poor and excluded women’s initiatives that increase their right to dignified living and liberate them from exclusion, violence and social injustice.
Interventions have therefore been both preventive and reactive in action.
Other key interventions
• PVA to look at the causes, effects and possible solutions to VAW
• Awareness raising on VAW issues with government, media campaigns, drama, demonstrations and workshops,
• Supporting family reunification programmes, business grants and training for survivors of VAW,
• Short-term housing to survivors of sexual violence, and
• Training on VAW issues at local military camps in the country.
Human Security
In promoting human security, the CP engaged in conducting risk assessment for humanitarian support, supporting resettlement of people, mobilisation of human and non-human resources to respond to emergencies, peace education for reconciliation and rebuilding livelihoods of returnee populations.
In collaboration with other partners like UN, WFP and INGOs the CP provided basic tools, seeds and equipment to displaced persons to help the resettlement process around Goma and South Kivu.
ActionAid has promoted Peace education and leadership development through schools to enable the youth to appreciate the importance of peace leading to preparation of the “peace curriculum” known as “on path to peace”
The major outcomes of these achievements are that people who found themselves in difficult situations are now settled back into their homes and secondly, the peace initiative in schools is beginning a healing process among the youth.
