ActionAid activists and members of CONCORD, the European confederation of development NGOs, line up to try to score the Millennium Development Goals
AidWatch is a Europe-wide campaign that holds the European Union to account on the quality and quantity of its development aid.
As the world’s biggest development donor, the EU has a key role to play in the fight against poverty and injustice. It must make sure that the aid it gives is used effectively, to reduce poverty and promote rights.
Back in 2005 EU member states agreed to provide 0.7% of their national income in aid by 2015. But the latest aid figures show that the EU member states missed their 2010 targets by €14.5 billion, so a massive effort is now needed to get back on track.
We know from our work in over 40 countries around the world that aid does work if focused on the real causes of poverty and injustice. However, this means projects need to be long-term, not providing quick fix solutions that don’t solve the problem.
That’s why we’re calling on EU member states to sign up to action plans showing how they’re going to meet the targets – and make sure they’re enforced.
