In addition, for every three Gambian adults, two are deprived of basic reading and writing skills. The quality of education, the availability and retention of quality teachers in the public schools especially in rural areas where facilities are limited remain major challenges for the country. Early Childhood Development and Care (ECDC) particularly in the rural areas and the diminishing role of the LGAs have limited the possibility of children of poor families to pursue their education beyond the primary level. The Education theme has the twin goals of ensuring adequate access to quality education for women, girls and children missing out of education, and to eradicate violence against girls.
