Kyekyewere, one of ActionAid Ghana’s 20 communities in the deprived Ga South Municipality was set agog when the vehicles conveying a group of 65 ActionAid supporters from Greece landed at the local primary school grounds on Monday, October 31, 2011.

The 65 volunteers, with support from ActionAid Ghana staff, have started constructing a 3-unit classroom block with ancillary facilities including a dressing room. The work is expected to continue till Friday where the contractor will take up the job from where the volunteers have left off.

I welcome you all to Kyekyewere.

That was how the Chief of Kyekyewere welcomed the guests.

The chief recounted the number of times the makeshift classrooms were raised to the ground any time a storm hits the community depriving children their right to quality education.

When it rains, the whole structure goes down and the children have to stay at home

He expressed the joy of the community for this support coming from ActionAid and the supporters from Greece; promising they will ensure that the building is maintained and demands are made on the municipal authorities to furnish the school with furniture, study materials and teachers among others.

Kyekyewere, one of the predominantly Akan communities located in the Ga South District has a population of about 400 people with children taking up about 42%. 121 of the children in this community are on ActionAid Ghana’s Child Sponsorship Scheme. The languages spoken in this area are Akan, Ga and Ewe.

The community has an uncompleted primary school pavilion. Three classrooms of this pavilion are partially completed and this occupied by pupils of the upper primary. Pupils of the nursery and lower primary hold their classes under sheds. There are 165 pupils and 5 teachers in the community.
