ActionAid in your country
In 2008, ActionAid helped to strengthen school governance to amplify the calls for the government to be accountable. ActionAid also worked with girls in schools to enable them lead their development agenda and supported women to occupy key positions at various decision making positions.
Two women were as a result elected into the country’s national parliament during the 2008 elections.
Although we campaigned for the government not to sign the Economic Partnership Agreements in order to protect local economy from domination by the already established economies of Europe, the government signed the interim Economic Partnership Agreement.
We supported small scale farmers to meet and negotiate their rights and support from the Ministry of Agriculture and parliamentary committees. Communities living around mining areas were also supported to discuss on a more equal footing with the mining companies to agree on a fair compensation for their destroyed crops.
ActionAid’s work on HIV resulted in over 500 positive people getting easy access to anti-retroviral treatment. Generally the year was exciting as it came with a basket of success and challenges details of which can be found in the 2008 annual report itself.
