Thiotte is located in the Southeast part of Haiti. We are working in Thiotte because it’s a remote area where people have no access to safe drinking water, education coverage and health care. Their main language is Haitian Creole.
The main activities carried out by our partner in this area that we support are in education and disaster risk reduction, with women's rights being a transversal matter in all activities. One of the major education actions undertaken in this area is the 4 fully built schools. These schools are now ensuring access to quality education for more than 2000 children.
Disaster risk reduction is a major part of our activities. ActionAid Haiti and CROSE implemented a project called Disaster Risk Reduction through schools (DRRS) in which children learned how to prevent disasters and what to do in case of an emergency. In total more than 3,500 children and 2,000 adults took part in identifying causes of their environment’s destruction and how to prevent disasters through reforestation. This project is part of an overall structure to avoid major floods like the ones Thiotte had in 2004 that killed hundreds.
