To commemorate the International Day Against Violence Against Women on November 25th, ActionAid Haiti and partner Cozpam organized a day of sensitization on violence against women in the camps of Philippeaux and Mariani. More than 1000 people participated.
This activity was held to help reduce violence against women in the camps. After the earthquake of January 12th, women have become more vulnerable and are now prone to more violence. The quality of their living conditions has decreased significantly along with their authority and presence in the household. The ratio of rape has increased quickly due to the promiscuity that exists in the camps. Under-aged girls are being abused sexually or are being misled into sexual activities resulting in early pregnancies. All this leaves the whole country, especially Port-au-Prince, to face the next baby boom.
To support women living in camps, ActionAid Haiti with partner Cozpam distributed reference cards with names and addresses of clinics that specifically receive women who are abused. The women also received information on cholera and the list of centers that can treat this infection. Other useful information was shared with the whole community particularly on how to reduce violence against women, how men should treat women equally, and how women should take a step forward in decision-making.
The sensitization techniques used were very expressive and participatory. Women from Cozpam prepared sketches with very common language, making it easier for everyone to understand the concept of violence against women and why it should stop.
