About us
ActionAid South Africa is a part of ActionAid International, an anti-poverty agency working with poor people in over 40 countries in Africa, Asia, Europe and the Americas.

ActionAid was official established in May 2006 as a country programme in South Africa.

Previously, the country programme operated as the Southern Africa Partnership Programme (SAPP) bringing together poverty eradication initiatives in Botswana, Lesotho, Malawi, Mozambique, Namibia, Swaziland, South Africa, Zambia and Zimbabwe.

How we work
 
ActionAid employs a rights-based approach and works with poor communities as well as community-based organisations, non-governmental organisations and other development players.

We also work with international players in an effort to influence pro-poor policy processes, to help create an enabling environment for the struggles of poor communities.

A world without poverty and injustice in which every person enjoys their right to a life of dignity.

Mission

To work with poor and excluded people to eradicate poverty and injustice.

Goals
  • Poor and excluded people and communities will exercise their power to secure their rights 
  • Women and girls will secure their power to secure their rights
  • Citizens and civil society across the world will fight for rights and injustice
  • States and their institutions will be accountable and democratic and will promote, protect and fulfill human rights for all.

ActionAid operates around six rights-based themes, with Women‘s Rights being the core focus in all thematic functions.
 
All the six themes – Women’s Rights, Food Rights, HIV/Aids, Human Security, Governance and Education – are interrelated to each other.
