Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) is a      severe form of violence against    women and girls that reflects a deep rooted       inequality between women and men and is an outcome of      patriarchal attitudes. It is a violation of women’s human rights to life, dignity and health. Since FGM is nearly   always carried out on minors, it is a serious violation of the rights of      children. The practice violates a girl’s and women’s rights to the highest attainable standards of health, including sexual and reproductive health, personal security and physical integrity, the right to be free from torture, and cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment, and the right to life (when the procedure results in death).
