World Social Forum 2009 Update (30th January)
The WSF is as always very much marked by diversity and differences among groups.
Walking during the morning breaks along the Rural University of Amazonia you can see all forms of expressions and celebrations of the 500 years of resistance, conquers and perspectives from afro descendant and indigenous groups.
Issues that sometimes are distant to us, appear very vividly and strongly in this Forum. One of the main issues brought by indigenous and afro descendant groups is the need to relate the global crises to the environmental crisis in Amazonia.
On the last day of the forum groups will get together to present the main political debate and issues around the different themes. The challenge is that groups and movements in the WSF have the capacity to articulate and bring ideas in common and move beyond the fragmentation in which we are still trapped. One of the expectations of this forum is to come with a stronger international networking among indigenous women.
One of the representatives at the Babassu nut breakers women’s stand explained to me that there was a large delegation from them, taking turns to stay in the stand and participating in the debates around the food crisis, especially in relation to Biofuels.
“This is not the first time we come to the forum, we are veterans and lovers of this space, but this is the first time we have a stand,” she says.
“It is an incredible experience, we explain to many groups who we are and what we do, they love our products; they come and buy, it is great experience for me."
