ActionAid continues relief distribution in Sri Lanka
The ongoing 25 year conflict in Sri Lanka escalated in the first few months of 2009.
As the conflict continues, ActionAid is working with injured and vulnerable people in temporary camps, where we are distributing hygiene kits, food, clothing, blankets, mattresses and drinking water.
Over 60,000 people have escaped the conflict zone in the last two months, where fighting between Sri Lankan government forces and the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) continues to claim the lives of civilians.
It is estimated by the UN that between 150,000 and 200,000 people are still trapped.
Due to continued fighting and the number of people trapped in the area, it is expected that the number of casualties will rise.
The government is keeping injured people and bystanders in temporary transit camps until they recover, before transferring them elsewhere.
As of 8th April there are over 500 people in Pathaviya transit camp, where there is an urgent need to fulfil the basic needs and medical facilities.
People’s key needs include food, drinking water, blankets, mattresses and clothing. It’s essential that hygienic conditions are maintained within and around the camp to prevent the spread of waterborne diseases such as cholera.
