TEGINT
Transforming girls' education in Nigeria and Tanzania
TEGINT is a five year project working in 132 schools in northern Tanzania and northern Nigeria.
It aims to transform the educational environment for girls by challenging gender relations in schools, communities and teacher training institutions.
It recognises that the gender barriers that keep girls out of school also prevent them from protecting themselves from HIV and AIDS, and expose them to risks and violence in the communities in which they live.
We are principally working with primary schools. Activities take place with the following groups:
-
The girls themselves through Girls’ Clubs, helping to build their skills and confidence
-
The teachers through in-service and pre-service training, helping them to combat gender discrimination in the classroom and giving them the skills to tackle HIV/AIDS in lessons
-
The parents through Community Development Circles (Tanzania) and STAR (Nigeria), helping to raise their awareness of girls’ rights and helping them to demand a quality learning environment
-
The School Management Committees (SMCs), giving them the skills to run a ‘gender–friendly’ school and to support and manage their teachers to ensure girls access an education
The project also comprises a large research element. A quantitative baseline stage was completed in 2008 and we are now in the second year of full project implementation.
