Chitipa

Chitipa Local Rights Programme located in the northern part of Malawi was established in 2005 to facilitate an environment that enables women and girls to claim and enjoy their rights.

This area is in a patriarchy society which has manifested itself in the harmful cultural practices such as lobola (Dowry) and Chiharo (wife inheritance).

The area works in 14 Group Village Heads with a total of 100 villages. Apart from carrying out the sponsorship funding, the DA is also implementing the social empowerment on Rights for the vulnerable and excluded women (SERVE) project funded by Irish Aid trough ActionAid Ireland. The project is being implemented by Chitipa women’s forum and is covering the whole district.
