ActionAid is an International development organisation supporting development initiatives in 50 countries across the world and works with poor and marginalised people to eradicate poverty by overcoming the injustice and inequity that cause it.
Set up in India in 1972, ActionAid operates out of 11 Regional Offices spread across 24 States and 1 Union Territory.
ActionAid India wishes to recruit a Communications Officer – Content and Web Editing, to be based at Delhi.
Main Job Responsibilities –
- Producing web content for www.actionaidindia.org. Being the content editor of ActionAid India website, working in conjunction with Fundraising, Programme, Thematic staff, to gather and produce content related to Action Aid's work. The job holder will occasionally research and gather stories personally but will rely mainly on a regular flow of content from a network of staff. To achieve this network of content producers, staff will need to be trained and the network maintained by the Web Editor. Some travel in India will be required to help identify and build a network of staff ‘reporters'.
- Training staff on how to produce web content (words and pictures) and source images from the photo library. Providing training and advice to programme and thematic staff on how to identify and capture stories in different settings; how to write stories for web audiences; and how to take pictures that meet quality standards of the ActionAid photo library. Promoting the use of the web site, electronic media and picture desk and providing guidelines and advice to staff in using the ActionAid photo library. Providing audio-visual advice and support for external presentations and seminars. Training staff on Content Management System (CMS). Providing in-country training to a handful of staff who will sometimes be responsible for uploading content to the website.
- Capturing strong visual and audio content reflecting ActionAid's work. Sourcing images from partners and staff and manage a portfolio of photographers, audio and film makers for special commissions using every opportunity to link commissions with media coverage.
- Commissioning will include writing Terms of Reference, negotiating the best price for the job, terms for ActionAid's license to use the material. Also examining the content and detail of contract before they are signed; assessing quality and signing off of the work; and completing paperwork for payment.
- Contributing images to the ActionAid image library ensuring images are scanned, captioned and linked with relevant text. Helping staff access India through explaining how the image library is used as well as accurate labelling, captioning and storage of images. Setting up and managing a basic storage and retrieval system for images that are too low quality for the main photo library but are useful for web, for example low resolution images shot by a project officer in an emergency situation.
- Marketing the website and increasing public interaction. Increasing traffic to the site, in particular to online fundraising pages once these are developed. Devising strong interactive elements so that target audiences in India visit and engage with ActionAid online. Working with the India fundraising team to help them develop online fundraising presence to work alongside online campaigning.
- Liaising with National and International Communications and Fundraising colleagues. Working with National and International media and image staff to ensure that support is secured for capturing and pushing stories from India and so that additional media and wed outlets for India web stories can be identified. Working with Fundraising staff to ensure that web and images support our fundraising strategies, including online fundraising.
- Building your own knowledge and skills, keeping abreast of creative and technical developments relevant to your job.
- Interacting with other ActionAid web/images staff for ideas and skills exchange. Viewing a range of sites and key industry publications. Training as required.
- Being responsible for any other tasks assigned by the Line Manager from time to time.
The ideal candidate should -
- Have Post-Graduation qualifications with minimum 3 years' experience as a journalist (with features experience), event management or with a creative agency.
- Have outstanding written English communication skills, with a cuttings file to illustrate writing and editing work done.
- Have ability to produce communications materials in different digital formats – photos, audio, and video – that with editing can be used for broadcast, web and event purposes.
- Have Photoshop and basic design ability to produce communications materials and web content.
- Have excellent project management skills, and experience of managing freelancers and agencies, such as photographers, video journalists, designers to help deliver project objectives.
- Be a good team player.
- Be willing to travel.
