ActionAid Nigeria refutes Leadership Newspaper’s allegation on gay rights

ActionAid Nigeria has rejected the claim by Leadership Newspaper that it “condemned same sex marriage, saying it should not be allowed in Nigeria”

According to Dr Hussaini Abdu, ActionAid Nigeria’s Country Director “ActionAid Nigeria has not granted interview to any media on the issue. Our position on gay right is not hidden in Nigeria. We have made public statements in the past stating that ActionAid Nigeria does not discriminate on peoples human rights. We are part of the few civil society organisations that have expressed strong opinion on the gay right bill when it was first mentioned over two years ago”.

“There is absolutely no truth in the allegations made by Leadership Newspapers.  As an organisation that places human rights at the centre of our development approach, ActionAid believes it is vitally important to protect people’s rights and totally condemns the criminalisation of people because of their sexual identity.  We reject the news report in its entirety and therefore ask Leadership Newspapers to retract their allegation immediately”.
