In its first three years EGBENN focused on designing strategies and programmes that addressed the gender inequality and the attendant factors within the three North Western states of Sokoto, Kebbi and Zamfara leading to an increase in girls’ enrolment from 25% to 43%.
The second phase is aimed at strengthening further, the capacities of community structures, including School Based Management Committees (SBMCs); the existing REFLECT circles; Civil Society Organisations (CSOs) and relevant institutions of government, to ensure gender equality in basic education. An important component of phase II is the design and execution of focused interventions on HIV/AIDS and Gender Based Violence, in order to address the challenge of vulnerability and risk particularly for girls, within the school environment as well as at the community level.
TEGIN is primarily implemented in Nigeria by Community Action for Popular Participation (CAPP) and Maarifa in Tanzania. The location of the project in Nigeria and Tanzania brings a strategic benefit to Africa: both countries act as important reference points in their sub-regions; so achieving quality education for girls in Nigeria and Tanzania will be a good inspiration to the rest of the continent. The project involves intensive work in 72 schools (36 primaries, 36 secondary) and surrounding communities in Nigeria.
There will be active engagement beyond these communities, working amongst others directly with teacher training colleges, local education authorities and teacher unions as well as influencing wider policy and practice.
