BT Cotton: Boon or Bane
.
Cotton is an important cash crop of Pakistan, which comprises two thirds of country’s agricultural exports. Recently Pakistan’s small farmers have raised serious concerns on government’s decision to allow Monsanto (a multinational company) to start BT cotton trail in Pakistan and probably sell their seed next year on commercial basis.
.
To facilitate the farmers to convey their concerns to the policy makers, ActionAid organised two seminars and farmers’ rallies in Hyderabad (Sindh) and Multan (Southern Punjab). The participating farmers criticised the government’s decision saying that while 77 million people in the country were food insecure, the government was offering undue incentives to Multinational Companies MNCs to grow transgenic crop.
