Limpopo Province – Thulamela Local Municipality

ActionAid South Africa works in four provinces, namely Limpopo, Northern Cape, Eastern Cape and KwaZulu Natal. Across all these provinces, six Local Rights Programmes were developed.

Thulamela Local Municipality is one of the four local municipalities comprising the Vhembe District Municipality. It is situated in the far north of Limpopo province. It is the largest municipality in the Limpopo province in terms of population. ActionAid’s Local Rights Programme in Thulamela started in 2006.  Key economic activity in the LRP is agriculture that includes production of vegetables, maize and fruits. ActionAid South Africa’s work in the LRP covers a total of 6 communities reaching a population of about 50000 people. Key challenges facing communities include high level of unemployment, poor quality of education and women abuse among others. The work of ActionAid’s in the area focuses on empowering communities, access to education as well as ensuring household food security through promoting sustainable farming practices.  Part of the work of ActionAid involves rights education campaigns in both women’s rights and child rights.
