ActionAid works in 12 districts in Tanzania mainland and Zanzibar Island

ActionAid in Tanzania works in seven regions covering 12 districts in Tanzania mainland and Zanzibar islands.

In the west of Tanzania, the organisation works in Kigoma rural district which is one of the four districts in Kigoma region.
 
ActionAid has helped to construct over 30 schools in this region which was formerly reserved as a zone for supplying labourers.
 
Apart from education, other key area of focus in this region is agriculture and food security to support small scale farmers to revamp production and support them to access markets.
 
HIV and AIDS and women’s rights work are other areas that the organisation focuses on here.
 
In the south ActionAid works in Liwale, Newala and Tandahimba.
 
While the main focus of ActionAid in Liwale is on education, agriculture and food security forms the bulk of ActionAid’s activities here.
 
People mainly depend on agriculture and these are some of the leading districts in the production of cashew.
 
They were grossly affected by the collapse of cooperatives and agriculture extensions services in the 90’s.

ActionAid’s work in the coast region covers Mkuranga, Bagamoyo, Kilwa and Mafia districts of Tanzania and Unguja and Pemba in Zanzibar islands.

Crops planted in the coast include cotton in Bagamoyo and cashew in Mkuranga.
 
Efforts to empower women to influence decisions and build economic power are also a key focus in Bagamoyo.
 
ActionAid’s in Kilwa and Mafia is expected to focus mainlyon agriculture and women’s rights as well as supporting people to be involved public indecisions that affect them.
 
In central Tanzania, ActionAid works in the semi arid Singida rural and Chamwino in Dodoma.
 
ActionAid’s main area of focus in Singida is HIV and Aids with other areas being agriculture and food security and women’s rights.
 
The new Chamwino focuses on building on HIV and Aids work as well as agriculture and foods security, women’s rights and governance as cross cutting theme.
