A Little can make a Big Difference
"This visit changed my life" said Keng, the base player from the Indy rock group, Playground. This past May, Keng and his friends Tik, Tui and Tul had a chance to help enhance the quality of education throughout small rural schools in the Mae Hong Son Province alongside ActionAid Thailand.
Playground started their activities at Kong Moo Der community in the Mae Hong Son Province. They spent the day contributing to the community by painting the school and classrooms as well as cooking for the children.
Playground shared their knowledge with community members and in return the community members shared their way of life.
The Playground team helped carry eggs for the children to Kong Moo Der School after finding out that the children had limited access to good nutrition.
They also learned that the school lacked proper educational resources.
Headmaster of Kong Moo Der School said that carrying fresh food for the children is very difficult and it is rare that the children receive healthy food for their daily lunch. He also mentioned that the students do not have proper uniforms which is seen to be important in attending school. The Headmaster felt proper food and uniforms were needed in order to support their children.
Playground teamed up with ActionAid to give students new uniforms the following day at Kong Moo Der School. The children and teachers were happy to receive their first school uniform.
Keng felt that he received a valuable experience from the community members. He was grateful to those families who once believed in him and gave him an opportunity. One of Playground's guitarist, Tul, expressed his feelings as a result of his charitable experience. He wants people in urban communities to share their time with others in need, especially those who are marginalized. By sharing happy times together we may see that life is getting better.
Tui, also a guitarist, stating that he felt that this is a good cause to support and it is important to be helpful in your society. When you are having a hard time keep in mind there are people out there suffering more than you.
You may start by looking around you. See what you can do to help. "For myself, I would be an amplifier to the public, telling them about the educational situation and how we can help the poor people and children in this matter" said Tik, the lead vocalist from Playground.
The young rock band continued their activities at Huay Kong Moon Community. Their new focus is to bring the community together in order to build a new school for the children since the old school has no space for the increasing number of the children.
At the end of last day, Playground put on a performance with the community members. They opened the show with a meaningful song called, "Moom." (at the corner).
