Disasters increase poverty, wiping out homes and livelihoods and causing a vicious circle of poverty, vulnerability and crisis. That's why our work with people affected by emergencies and conflict plays a key part in our fight against poverty.

At ActionAid Uganda we believe that people have a right to security even in situations of emergency. We promote the rights of people in conflict areas through mobilisation and by strengthening communities to better prevent, prepare for and respond to conflict and emergencies.

Our work on human security strategically focuses on conflict resolution and peace building by integrating all of the other work we do in the areas of women’s rights/HIV/AIDS, education, food rights and governance.

We support emergency interventions within a rights-based perspective and work to strengthen relationships between individuals and society to promote sub-regional and regional interventions.

Our conflict and emergency work includes to:

  • Use Poverty Vulnerability Analysis (PVA) and other participatory approaches which are central to all our human security work.
  • Mobilize, organize and strengthen civil society organizations and social movements to promote peace, justice, and human security.
  • Support local, sub-regional and regional interventions in conflict prevention, small arms trade, peace-keeping and transitional justice in African countries and for civic participation in such processes.
  • Strengthen our relief, humanitarian, peace-building and policy work with internally displaced persons (IDPs).
  • Support the protection of women in situations of conflict.
  • Share best practices models for peace building through research, documentation and collaboration nationally and across the region and internationally.
  • Build internal capacity for staff to effectively manage human security programs in conflict resolutions and peace building.
