Responding to the outcome of the Ministerial-level Pledging Event to Support the Humanitarian Response in Sudan and the Region, Tinebeb Berhane, ActionAid Ethiopia Country Director, said:

“We are deeply disappointed by today’s results at the pledging event. These results have failed to meet the urgent humanitarian needs of the people of Sudan at the intersect of growing hostilities, climate crisis, and displacement.

Sudan is facing a polycrisis and any regression in humanitarian funding will result in the increasing vulnerabilities of women and girls including forced and child marriage, trafficking and sexual and gender-based violence.

The result of the underfunding goes beyond Sudan, which was host to 1.1 million refugees before the war began. What happened today will risk distablising neighbouring countries in the Horn of Africa including Ethiopia which is already underfunded, recuperating from conflict and climate induced draught.

We need to urgently protect women and girls in Sudan. The International community must disburse the pledges rapidly and increase funding to hosting countries while ensuring that women and youth-led organizations leading the response are adequately funded.  We call on the international community to pledge empathetically and save the lives of women, girls and children."
